Abstract
In this paper, water-reducible acrylic-grafted polyester (A-GP) was synthetized by grafting polymerization of hydrophilic acrylic monomers including acrylic acid (AA), butyl acrylate (BA) and (Hydroxyethyl) methacrylate (HEMA) on unsaturated polyester backbones. The effect of HEMA on the dispersion stability of the water-reducible A-GP was investigated using acid and hydroxyl values, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), dynamic laser scattering (DLS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis. It was observed that grafting polymerization of HEMA on polyester resulted to a heterogenous product with two phases, but the grafting polymerization of HEMA, BA and AA on polyester containing 7.5% fumaric acid with an optimum condition including of 1:1.2:1 mass ratio of AA: BA: HEMA, 75: 25 mass ratio of polyester/ acrylic monomers and neutralizing at pH=8 could be used as stable dispersion in automotive industries application to be cured by melamine.
